This was a good victory for West Ham United and a real boast for their players and this ended a run of three straight league defeats in a row for them. Nolberto Solano came on as a substitute and made his debut for the Hammers in this game against Sunderland.
Carlton Cole scored the first goal of the game in the 9th minute, giving West Ham United the lead, and this was his first goal of the season in only his third start for the Hammers, but Kenwyne Jones headed a great shot in the 52nd minute for Sunderland and equalising the score, giving them hope. Sunderland could have gone in front in the first minute of the game after winning a corner but Jones unchallenged header flew over the bar from about eight yards out. Another early scare for the Hammers was when Goal keeper Robert Green spilled the ball after Greg Halford’s throw in was flicked in, but he quickly recovered to grab the ball in the second attempt.
West Hams defence were a little bit untidy at times, but other than that they seemed in good shape and knocking the ball about neatly for most of the game. Sunderland made two substitutes to their team at half time taking of both Wallace and O’Donovan and replacing them with Anthony Stokes and striker Michael Chopra. The Hammers also made a two substitutions in the 73rd minute of the game replacing Noble and Etherington with Luis boa Mort and Solance and both players were institutional in the goal for the Hammers for minutes later in a very unlucky own goal for Sunderland’s Goal keeper Gordon. Bellamy raped up the game for the Hammers in injury time, when he finished off another left wing run by Boa Morte and sticking the ball in the net making the score 3-1 to the Hammers.
Match Quotes -
Alan Curbishley – “We’ll take it because there’s going to be another time we have the lion’s share of a game and come out with nothing. We got stunned by the goal and it turned the whole thing round, Sunderland grew in stature after that.”
Roy Keane – “We had to change it at half-time, we were not in control of the game. We got the goal back and the next goal was always going to win it and unfortunately it fell to West Ham.”
