In recent years both sides have been more accustomed to relegation battles than promotion races but since the arrival of managers Keith Hill at Spotland and Jim Gannon at Edgeley Park both clubs have had a change in fortunes.
When Keith Hill took over Rochdale in January 2007 his first job was to rescue the club for yet another battle to stay in the league. He changed attitudes and the style of play and a fantastic run of results took ‘the Dale’ to the verge of the playoffs. This season they built on that run with limited resources and will be going to the home of English football for the first time in the clubs 100 year history.
It was a similar story at Stockport. Former county favourite Jim Gannon was installed in his post with one mission – to turn the club around. I think it’s fair to say he’s done exactly that and after two record breaking seasons and narrowly missing out on the playoffs last season they will have their chance at promotion.
Playoffs are more often than not a lottery and, as the old cliché goes, anything can happen in a final. That said Stockport will enter the game slight favourites after beating their local rivals twice this season the most recent a two nil victory in march.
