Yesterday (Sunday 5th October) I sat down and watched the wonderful spectacle of French horse racing, the l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp which is one of the biggest flat races in the world and certainly one of the most rewarding with a lot of prize money on offer. Yesterday however I feel that I witnessed the greatest ever filly to ever run anywhere throughout the world and even the trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre stated it was the best horse he had ever had in his stables.

Pre-race favourite Zarkava produced a storming finish to take first place after being expertly ridden by top French jockey Christophe Soumillon who stalked the leading pack for much before unleashing the marvellous three year old when a gap appeared on the home straight and powered into the lead leaving all the rest of the field in his shadows and if you ask me the horse wasn’t even at full speed and could have gone up another gear quite easily if he had been pushed.
What made the race more impressive was the fact that the horse was the first filly to win the race since Urban Sea in 1993. Mick Channon’s Youmzain priced at 12-1 ran another cracking race to finish runner-up for the second year in a row after trying to win the race by charging up the rail on the final stretch before being pipped just before the finish line.
