As I type this we’re actually smack bang in the middle of the Australian Open and is held in Melbourne, which is one of the big four and is played on a hard (plexicushion) court. Then we have the US Open which is held in New York City and is also played on a hard court but it is Decoturf. Next up we have the French open, held in Paris and is played on a clay court. Then finally we have the big one, the one every professional player wants to win, Wimbledon, held in London and played on a grass court. All the major tournaments last for two weeks and players who go all the way are playing a competitive match on average every other day which must take so much stamina it’s unreal, can you name one other sport where it is played competitively so regularly? The most popular combination in tennis is the singles, men v men and men v women, but there are also the doubles game and the mixed doubles game, mixed doubles is where you will have a man and a woman on the same team. For doubles matches this is there the tram lines on the court class as an extension to the court to give the players more chance of playing a better game with a bigger court to aim at.

www.ladbrooks.com – This last two weeks has probably been the most hectic two weeks of anybody that is involved in the English Cricket teams make up. First we had the rumours of a major fall out between the then English Captain Kevin Pieterson and Head coach David Moores then we had the double resignation or sacking of them both (depending on who you believe) then within 24 hours we had the new captain being named in Andrew Strauss and just to top it off we had former Pakistan spin legend Mushtaq Ahmed given the job of trying to nurture England’s spin bowlers into World beaters and I think personally he is the best man for the job.
With the English team due to arrive in the West Indies on the 21st of Jan all the talk will be around Pieterson’s departure as captain and Strauss filling the void but with so much at stake with England having a disastrous 2008 it is imperative that England learn how to win again before their titanic tussle with Australia in the summer for the Ashes.
The squad which has been chosen to represent the three lions has thrown up a couple of surprises in its choice but with four Test matches and five one day internationals and a twenty-twenty match chucked in as well it will be left up to the side which has been together for a few years now to start showing the potential that it was strongly tipped too when these young boys were given the chance.

www.bewin.comAfter much deliberation, the NRL has approved the 2 referee system on 11 December 2008. This is one of the most talked, debated and talked about rule change in the long history of the game. The idea was first mooted in the NRL’s annual chief executives’ conference in November and was ratified recently.
What will happen now is that the NRL will have a 2 referee system, with one as an assistant referee taking charge of the play-ball area, and another chief referee at the 1- metre opposing team’s defence line. The head referee will be blowing the whistle and making the calls, while the assistant will provide feedback and information to the head referee. That said, the two referees will rotate the two roles throughout the game.
This will certainly stop people from arguing about decisions made on-field which is common place, given that one referee has to follow the game can cannot keep his eyes on everything that is going on in the game.
However, on the contrary, the NRL has taken away the powers of the video referee, disallowing the video officials to make calls on stripping decisions and making calls on fouls.
Another upcoming change that is widely popular with fans of the sport is that a defending player who attempts to block a try score move using his feet or legs will now face misconduct charges instead of just being given a warning.
Regardless, all these new rules are done with the sole aim and purpose to make the sport more professional and skilled based, rather than being won based on underhand and dirty tricks, which is much lauded, given that it should be skills and teamwork that the game is about.

Premiership Tips for the Weekend

If Manchester United win their home midweek game over Wigan then the game with Bolton on Saturday away at the Reebok Stadium could see them leapfrog leaders Liverpool who host Everton on Monday in their 1st of their two meetings in a week after the pair were drew together in the FA Cup on the following weekend. I happen to think Man Utd will win both games but I also fancy Liverpool to beat Everton and remain top going into next week.
The two out of sort London teams both have winnable games in which I expect them to take maximum points from. Chelsea host Stoke City and should get 3 points comfortably and like wise Arsenal who travel to Hull City for the live Saturday night game.
Aston Villa hopes to carry on their brilliant form away at Sunderland and I can see them getting the win by the odd goal and keep their Champions League ambitions alive.
This weekend could see a big lift for Newcastle if they can overcome a Blackburn Rovers side that now has Sam Allardyce at the helm and I fancy the toon to sneak this game and start to pull away from that dreaded drop zone.The other games on Saturday have Man City at home to Wigan and I think this is nailed on for a draw. Sundays games sees Portsmouth make the trip to Tottenham to face their former manager Harry Redknapp who are desperate for a win which think they will easily manage. And the last game of the weekend is a London derby involving West Ham and Fulham and for me this is a certain draw.

In a practice match against the Western Australian second XI, South African Morne Morkel cam crashing down after bowling the very first ball of his spell following a suspected rolled ankle.
Morkel was unable to continue bowling and left the field in the hands of a trainer, much to the dismay of South African Captain Graeme Smith and his team mates.

The Proteas managed just 2/185 from their 50 overs despite a solid 105 from Hashim Asla and a promising 52 from Jacques Kallis.
West Australian skipper Adam Voges came out to blaze 87 from just 78 balls to lead his team to a very comfortable 4/225 off 50 overs.
Morkel is said to have relatively minor swelling and discomfort and will more than likely take no further part in any practice matches.
The team doctor is confident, however, that Morkel will be fit for the first test next week.

www.totessport.co.uk – Chelsea would have definitely felt the pressure to perform for this match not only for the sake of winning, but more of usurping Liverpool for this entire Premier League game. It was a good opportunity to gain a one point advantage to top the Premier League games. However, the game with West Ham resulted in a draw leaving many supporters disappointed.
It appears that even though the match was played at Stamford Bridge, it was absolutely of no advantage to Chelsea, and a tinge of the group’s lack of cohesiveness was displayed during the game.
There were many missed opportunities as seen from Carlton Cole who came extremely close to sealing the game to gain a winning edge over West Ham. Michael Ballack also attempted at the opposition’s goal post, but Joe Cole failed to follow through with the persistent of Parker.
The game at some point of time turned heated when Frank Lampard was denied a penalty as he claimed that he was tripped by Neil. Also, Chelsea claimed that Noble had only achieved a goal as he had used his arm. This left Michael Ballack extremely furious causing an up stir with the referee, and was booked as a result of it.
All in all, Chelsea lost the golden opportunity and this entire Premier League is thrown into the air as to who the clear winner will be.

www.totessport.co.uk – With the return after injury of the greatest living golfer of his time I thought it would be a good time to write about one of the greatest Sporting icons of the last twenty years at least.
Tiger Woods was named after his father who fought in Vietnam was saved from certain death by a local Vietnamese worker who 1st name was Tiger. He then vowed to call his 1st son after the person and what a son he has turned out to be.
As well as winning everything in the game of Golf Tiger still has a bit of unfinished business with a few records still to be broken. Woods has also held the number one ranked position in the world for the most consecutive weeks and for the greatest total number of weeks and to be honest I don’t envisage anyone very getting close to. Currently still the World No. 1 player in the World even though he has been injured for months he was the highest-paid professional athlete in 2007 largely due to his massive contract by Nike, having earned an estimated $122 million from winnings and endorsements you would think he would slow down but not tiger, he still plays with the same determination that got him here in the 1st place and with him being only 33 I can see him being around for a good few years yet when you consider some of the ages of the guys on the current PGA tour.
One thing is for sure though and that is the other players better have upped their game while Tiger has been away because he is sure to be very hungry for more silverware and records and that can only be bad news for his rivals.

Robbie McKewen and Baiden Cooke will ride side by side at HiSense Arena for the men’s Madison event at this year’s Revolution 4 Indoor Track Cycling extravaganza.
It’s not the first time the pair have ridden sided by side.
In 2003 Cooke edged out McKewen by just millimetres on the Champs Elysees after the two literally raced shoulder to shoulder in a grandstand finish to the overall green sprinters jersey.
The two (along with Stuart O’Grady and Cadel Evans) are the faces of Australian Cycling overseas and Mckewen has tasted plenty of success in Europe’s toughest two races.
Not only has he worn the green jersey numerous times he has also enjoyed 12 stage wins in the Tour de France and 13 stage wins in the Giro d Italia.
Organisers of Revolution 4 are expecting a sell out crowd to watch the Madison, which is one of the most entertaining races on the cycling card.
Cyclist fly around the track at speeds of over 50km an hour, grabbing the arm of their team mate and ‘slingshotting him’ in a bid to gain maximum speed.
Both Cooke (who was previously a Madison specialist) and McKewen are expecting fierce competition in tonight’s main event.
They are up against dual Olympic gold medalist Graeme Brown who is renowned for being one of the toughest and hardest competitors in the world.
There are also a host of young guns all ready to knock the two international superstars off their perch in what should be a blockbuster event.

Following two weeks of criticism and scrutiny for abusing match referee Ashley Klein in the aftermath of the Kangaroos loss, Stuart was fined $20, 000 by World Cup organizers though the decision to effectively quit as coach was his own.

However it does heighten speculation that his position was already in jeopardy ahead of the Australian Rugby League Board meeting tomorrow in which the incident (and Stuarts’s immediate future as the national coach) was on the agenda.
It may be seen a s a pre-emptive strike by Stuart who accepted the fine and the criticism with unusually good grace – the first person to admit he’d made a pretty big mistake.
The World Cup organizers who handed down the hefty fine also took into account Stuart’s contribution to the international Rugby League scene from his debut as a player in 1986 right up until this unfortunate interest.
Stuart has made a habit of voicing his strong opinions, particularly in the latter half of this year his comments depicting Melbourne Storm players as a protected species incensed New South Wales and Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy to the point to the point where he too was fined for the comments he made in retaliation.
Although Bellamy has his hands full rebuilding a side that has won just one of it’s three consecutive grand final appearances, he will be a hot favourite to take over the top job next year.
