England only played 1 qualifying game this week but that was enough for them to take a 5 point lead at the top of their group after a hard fought 2-1 victory over Ukraine at a packed Wembley.
Crouch who celebrated his recall to the national side replacing Heskey and Darren Bent who both pulled out through injury after the weekend friendly 4-0 demolition of Slovakia with the opening goal of the game against Ukraine and celebrated his strike with his world famous robot dance which gets the atmosphere rising throughout the stands at Wembley then Shevchenko looked like grabbing a point for the visitors until Captain John Terry’s late header grabbed all the points for the three lions and now they look like barring a disaster easy qualifiers for South Africa.
Scotland had mixed fortunes in their two games, first losing heavily 3-0 away in Holland before restoring national pride in their 2-1 home victory over Iceland to leave them 2nd in their group.
Both the Republic and Northern Ireland look good in their groups with the Republic drawing both their games with Bulgaria and Italy which leaves them in a strong position in 2nd place and little Northern Ireland had two fantastic victories over Poland (3-2) and then Slovenia (1-0) leaving them top and dreaming of the finals.
Wales had a week they would most like to forget, first going down 2-0 at home to Finland they followed that up with a 2-0 loss at home to Germany leaving them with no earthly chance of qualification and their fans booing them off the pitch.
