Horse racing is a gambling sports that has been around since ancient times but it was only later in 12th century when it became a professional sport when King Henry II of England started breeding Arabian stallions with English mares. This is the breed extensively used in horse racing today.
As racing became more and more popular through the years, the breeding of racehorses also underwent some changes. More Arabian stallions were imported to the country and bred with English mares producing powerful and spirited horses with amazing speed.
Gambling expanded in an alarming rate when technological innovations that were developed in the 19th century led horse racing into becoming the most popular sport in the country with millions of people watching and now with the boom of online betting and bookmaking sites such as Ladbrokes, Paddy Power and Gala Coral, people found an even easier way to place their bets and right from the comforts of their homes. They won’t have to drive to betting shops and waste gas or sit in traffics.
This became one of the issues most talked about today, gambling sports such as horse racing, greyhound racing and darts could be doing more harm than good to the society as they seem to be encouraging more and more people to turn into gambling especially with the credit crunch biting hard.
