As a sport, there were records indicating that the first boxing bout ever was in the 23rd Olympiad, in 688 BC. Boxing was much more a risk back then as fighters did not have any gloves on. They only have thin strips of leather protecting their hands.
Modern day boxing is way different. A boxer has to equip himself not just with a pair of gloves but with heart and spirit. He has to have the character and built of a boxer. He should have high endurance comparable or, if not, better than that of his opponent. He should have power, ability, speed and most of all, strategy. This is where boxing has been compared to chess. A boxer has to think and anticipate what his opponent is going to do next if he wants to win the match.
One of the matches I am currently looking forward to is the Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton match on May 2009 in Las Vegas. Both boxers have been training hard ever since the match was officially announced. Critics have been criticizing and comparing one boxer to the other and continuously gushing as to who should get the pound-for-pound title. People have been talking about it for months on end, making this upcoming match one of the most awaited ever!
