In history, one of the most significant developments in basketball is the merge of the National Basketball League (NBL) and the Basketball Association of America in New York City, in 1946, the merge of which created the National Basketball Association (NBA).

NBA became very competitive from the late 1950s to the early 1970s and experienced a drop in popularity during the late 1970s but was revived when very talented players came into the picture.
Thanks to NBA players like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and a few others, thanks to great coaches like Pat Riley, Don Nelson, Phil Jackson and all other coaches, and the rest of the people in the Basketball Hall of Fame who have greatly contributed to the game, basketball remains one of the most popular American sports today.
This time with international players joining the teams such Leandro Barbosa of Brazil, Manu Ginobili of Argentina, Tony Parker of France and Yao Ming of China, to name a few.
