McLaren have got off to what can only be described as a shaky start after being pipped to the post with the new ‘diffuser’ technology by Team Brawn and after being hauled through disciplinary proceedings for events that unfolded after Hamilton ‘misled the race stewards’ following an incident between himself and Trulli in the Australian Grand Prix.
The surprise package of the season at William Hill so far has to be Jensen Button who currently leads the Driver’s Championship with 41 points. Team Brawn (formerly Honda) will be ecstatic to have Button in their pit lane given that after five races he has four chequered flags under his belt. The good news for Team Brawn is that his form is showing no signs of abating as he took pole position in the Spanish Grand Prix with a fine performance in qualifying and went on to win his fifth race of the season in convincing fashion.
Button drove a near perfect race in Spain, finished 13 seconds ahead of his team mate, Rubens Barrichello and 14 seconds ahead of Red Bull’s Mark Webber. Hamilton’s troublesome season continued in Spain as he only managed to finish in 9th place and he had the embarrassment of being lapped by Button on his final lap. While Button’s driving was faultless, Brawn’s first and second placed finish was mainly down to a switch from a three stop strategy to two, showing exactly how their free thinking and dynamic approach is paying dividends and really shaking up the very foundations of F1.
